Sumatran Orangutan in Ketambe | Leuser Ecosystem

Leonardo Dicaprio & Adrien Brody Travels To Aceh Sumatra To Meet Orangutan

Ketambe Research Station is the first orangutan research station in the world and was built by Dr. Herman D. Rikjsen, a Dutch researcher, in 1971. It is estimated that no less than 300 studies have been conducted at this station on a wide variety of species of fauna and flora. Unfortunately in 2011, the station was closed due to conflict over management between Aceh and central government and ended in the burning of the station by criminals.
After a lengthy process of relationship building by the Leuser Conservation Forum with Aceh forestry and the national park authority, there is hope once more for reactivating this research station.
Leonardo DiCaprio visited Mount Leuser National Park in Aceh.Leonardo DiCaprio and his entourage witnessed the biodiversity of Aceh at Ketambe Research Station, Southeast Aceh and met with three Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) not far from the research station. DiCaprio has spent almost two hours just to watch the behaviour of Sumatran orangutan. The Mount Leuser National Park supports anyone who has a good intention to help the Leuser conservation. We also appreciate environmental activist that campaign for the preservation of the nature including Leonardo DiCaprio and his partners. See Video >>>
